Behind Thailand's May 19 Visa Decision

On May 19, 2026, Thailand cut visa-free stays from 60 to 30 days for 93 countries. Social media reaction was mostly “this will kill tourism,” but the real driver had less to do with tourists and more to do with an abuse pattern spiraling out of control — and it’s a signal that more restrictions could be coming.

The Official Reason vs. the Real Reason

Thailand’s tourism minister explained the decision with a simple stat: “the average tourist already stays 9 days — a real tourist doesn’t need 60.” That’s true, but incomplete. As I laid out in my first-7-days guide, the actual problem was a minority using the 60 days as something other than a tourist stay: leaving and re-entering every 60 days, effectively never leaving at all. In Pattaya and Phuket, this “visa tourism” spun completely out of control — police arrested hundreds of foreigners this year running illegal businesses, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.

Who’s Actually Affected?

For someone planning a short trip, this change is barely noticeable — the average stay is already 9 days, as the minister pointed out. The people who actually feel it fall into three groups: long-term “digital nomad” style stayers (now needing a border run every month instead of every two), foreigners “getting by” without a proper long-stay or retirement visa, and — as I warned in my guide — vacationers who miscount the month and land on an accidental overstay.

What Might Come Next

I don’t think this decision happened in isolation. Thailand’s government has revised its visa system a few times over the past year — the arrival of the DTV, tighter enforcement on ED visas. I read this as a signal that the era of “loose tourist visa, stay indefinitely” is closing, replaced by sharper categories based on actual intent (short trip / digital nomad / student / retiree). I don’t know for certain — but if you’re planning a longer stay, researching the right visa category instead of relying on a gray area just got a lot more important.
